MIT OCW- free MIT course materials online!

I am reviewing MIT's list of courses they provide for free via their OCW site. I first became aware of this site last year, and used and cited some of the material in my writing classes.

Textbroker: content writing freelance site for newbies with video

I just registered for textbroker.com, and complete their first online writing diagnostics. I have heard many positive reviews of textbroker.com from a number of friends. I always ask the textbroker.com author's the most important question, "But do you get paid?".  The answer is yes, and for the emerging content writer, with many interests, textbroker.com registration is free, so what do I have to lose?

Ice houses made from truck sleepers, fishing shanty pictures

I am still looking for ideas on building a new icehouse. Here are some of my favorite designs, and they reuse truck sleepers, which is really innovative.  The sleeper already have doors, and look to be very easy to convert into ice houses.  I have found a few on craigslist in this area for cheap $50-$200, by doing a search for "truck sleepers":

When I used to live in Wisconsin, Roehl, pronounced  "Rail", trucks were a very familiar site. They are a large trucking companies, but what I like about Roehl is the way they offer home time choices for drivers, and they also have an excellent training program.

We fired up our sauna yesterday for the first time this winter and with an outside temp. of 20F,
and the temperature inside the sauna at 160F, the experience always makes me feel a different
perspective, despite the cold.

The faded remnants of the cabin are tough like this cold, desolate place, and some of the hobo's original building supplies stubbornly refuse to be taken back by this earth, despite being exposed to this harsh land for the past 50 seasons. It was once the seasonal home of a train hobo, back in the 1960’s, and to time lapse until now, 2014:


I see the large, oak dotted, savanna hillside has claimed back almost all of the small log cabin’s crumbling remains. It’s faltering ruins sit on the west end of the small muskrat pond, and I imagine the original inhabitant placed it here so he could rise each morning with the sun, and sit and watch the small pond come alive.

Now, father and I sit in our homemade, or store bought, deer stands, overlooking the cabin ruins, and the still remaining, and relatively untouched, muskrat pond. We come to this place for a few days each year, during the Minnesota deer hunting season.


The flattened tobacco can stovepipe thimble still lies in the cabin’s ruins, along with some rotting posts and hand cut logs; logs used for the first run of the small cabin. A few concrete bricks and other debris can still be found, but the earth has taken much of this once inhabited spot back, at least for now.


When I was young, and spent more time exploring out in the these same woods in 1987:


I found some of the hobo’s old peanut butter jars, and Prince Albert tobacco cans, from back when he would stay, or squat, in this small cabin during the short, Minnesota summers. 
I bring them home, and hide them in the wall of the tin quonset.

According to my father, the hobo would arrive via the northbound train in May, and leave on the southbound train in the first part of September. I imagine he never stuck around to deer hunt, that is if they even had licensing for such things fifty years ago.


The architecturally savvy hobo picked a fine place for a shack, and over time I have come to appreciate the unique location . This farmland, which hasn’t been tilled since I started hunting it, is teetering on the edge of three important ecological intersections, at the confluence of Minnesota’s forest, prairie, and oak savanna. I am jealous of the hobo’s eye for great building sites.

I want to honor this place by building a small cabin of my own on the same spot. I will reuse the hobo’s handmade thimble, and I have a small ice fishing house woodstove, and a length of pipe I will use to heat the small space. I never met the cabin’s original inhabitant, but I share his vision. This is the perfect place for a small, handmade shelter of my own.

This is my idea for a cheap portable for this year. Might have to weight it down or
attach to a sheet of treated plywood with zip ties, and thin it will be time to fish. Might
use spray paint to cover some of the clear plastic, and leave spots for windows, insert
buddy heater, radio, and buckets, and it should be a good little shelter for calm days.
Not heading up to Lake of the Woods with this setup, but should work well for round here.

Ice house pictures: one person ice house made from freezer with safety features included?

Here are two pictures of ice fishing house designs I like due to the way they incorporate natural light for the short, dark days of winter:

But the most financially friendly and ingenious design goes to the builder of the freezer ice house:

This is a one person ice house made from a freezer. I remember the warnings when I was younger to never go inside an old freezer, but this is a very cool way to reuse the old icebox. Plus, this design comes with free integrated insulation.

Walls are 1.5"x2.5" ripped from 2x6"s, the shack is 6'3" tall on the inside

I got two brand new 12"x30" windows for free from a friend and I will be making 2 more plexiglass windows that are 12"x8" (Sorry picture wont up load)

I also got a free older shack that had tin on it so I took it off the tin and put it on the one I am making now. here are a couple pic's with the tin on the new shack. the old shack that had the tin on it was crap and weigh a ton because it was steel.

Transitions

The freshly laid plywood soaks in the morning sun. I walk to the garage for more nails and a tape measure. I leave footprints in the freshly peeled plywood. The days skateboarding don’t get any better than this...I can drop in on my ramp, feeling the transitions I patiently cut, and do an axle stall on steel coping, hearing the “tink” sound of my trucks, metal on metal, feeling my weight shift as I slide the metals together a little, confidently dropping back in, ready before I even leave, for the endless transitions.

My father and I bought our honda hawk on a trip out to visit my older brother and his family in Bismarck, ND on Easter back in 2001. The bike was in Buelah, and 300$ cash took her. Fun bike!  Might have to do some carb. work this winter, and take her down south, or just buy a new bike.
