One Man Logging Operations Links: A Lone Wolf in the Woods

TimberWest Magazine November/December 2014 -A Lone Wolf in the Woods
Despite the large scale mechanization of logging, some individuals are still
working solo in the woods.  I have included some articles on men that log alone and keep their costs low so they don't have to be making payments on the million dollar equipment that has become the norm with most logging companies.
In Minnesota, the economic crash made many logging outfits fold and close their doors for good. There is still plenty of logging going on in this state, but it is so large scale that it is almost impossible to start a logging outfit without having some deep pockets.
I have included these links to show that it still may be possible to log without huge overhead, but as for how much profits will be involved, I have no idea.
Enjoy the articles:

Students head back to hands-on high school

Students head back to hands-on high school: The traditional, academic college route is not for everyone. This really came through when Astoria High School Principal Lynn Jackson was talking about graduation rates — specifically about why males tend to graduate less and drop out at an exponentially higher rate than females in local high

Nebraska Greenhouse Growing Citrus with Geothermal and Minnesota Greenhouse Grower

Walpini Underground Greenhouse

From the website:http://www.greenhouseinthesnow.com/index.html
We have created a climate that is frost free that many plants thrive in by tapping the unlimited earth temperature of 52° at the 8' depth. Our only energy used for heat is a 10" wheel blower that circulates air through 7  6" tubes that have a total length of 1050'. This is a closed very air tight unit and the same air is circulated continually.  During the winter we use very little water as there is no humidity lost through evaporation.  Russ Finch

Barry's Cherries in Staples, Minnesota
Cherry tomatoes grow on a large trellis in one of Barry’s Cherries high tunnels. They are planted in the visible white bags hung from the frame and are watered one minute per hour during the day and one minute per three hours during the night. Any excess water flows to the green peppers below.

Weekly Trucking Vlog #50-Ohio/Break Down/Oklahoma

In this episode, Palerider remains cool and calm despite having to deal with crosswinds in Illinois and Missouri.  He has has the starter go out on his truck, and he needs to be towed to the International dealership down in OK city.   Like every weekly Vlog, he does a great job rolling with the highs and lows of a life out on the road.

Kill Trap

Kill Trap
I stepped in a kill trap today. The bruise is swollen with my blood. The Fall creeps into Minnesota during the middle of September. I started by dying the traps in boiled oak leaves, and setting becomes a daily activity.  The traps have been laid out to rust long before their dying. Every swamp and popple forest is filled with potential places to set. My hands ache from the cold steel, but the warm, fleeting breezy days offer some relief. The bridge is out, and I coat my hands in a thin sheen of grease to make one more set.

GMC Cabover Astro Trucking Stories and Pictures

My friend's father, Art used to drive a truck like the GMC Astro pictured above.  He told me a great story about hauling a load of Redwood picnic tables from Winnipeg, Manitoba down to Chicago, IL.  He said when they were taking the tables off the flatbed with the forklift, the forklift driver dropped one of the tables, and said they couldn't take it, and would have to just throw it away, so Art, not wanting to deadhead back, said he would take it, and it still was out sitting in his yard to this day.   He gave up the trucking lifestyle years ago, but Art still had plenty of stories to share about his life out on the road in a cabover Astro.

Here are some more pictures of GMC Astros:

Expedite Truck Sleepers and Pictures

2007 Kenworth

I think a truck like this would be a better investment when compared to vans for expediting. This truck is able to pull up to a dock to load, and can handle more of a payload when compared to other expediting equipment options.

It is for sale at http://www.expeditersonline.com/inventory/listings/trucks/2007-kenworth-t300-26363.php

Funding Available to Boost Declining Honey Bee Population and Fact Sheet

Funding Available to Boost Declining Honey Bee Population

Excerpt from the article:

On Friday, June 20, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the availability of $8 million in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) incentives for Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin farmers and ranchers who establish new habitats for declining honey bee populations on their existing CRP acres.  These five states are home for more than half of the commercially managed honey bees during the summer and are therefore a critical focus in efforts to restore honey bee habitat.
The new CRP pollinator initiative, administered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), is designed to further enhance existing CRP land, allowing for it to provide honey bees with better access to pollinator forage.  Through the program, producers can manage or replace existing vegetation with lower cost, high nutrition seed mixes for plants that provide the specific blooming cycles needed to benefit pollinators.
Such habitats will provide honey bees with more blooms from which they can collect nectar and pollen to sustain and promote colony growth and honey production throughout the growing season.  Today’s announced CRP pollinator initiative takes advantage of new seed mixes that were developed by NRCS./
